Compostable and Biodegradable Packaging

What is the major difference between compostable and biodegradable packaging? Compostable packaging is made of plant materials which decomposes into natural elements, leaving no toxicity in the soil. Contrarily biodegradable packaging have additives that over time will break the plastic down into smaller sized pieces which take many decades to disappear. Different classes of plastic can degrade at various times.
